Huaxi Village

Rebuilding within
the Linpan pattern

Following the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Weibing Liu’s 2009 reconstruction design for Huaxi Village sought to retain the diversity of the existing Linpan settlement pattern. Work with residents and local government brought housing reconstruction, landscape planning and local livelihoods into a shared process.

Working with
the Linpan pattern

On the Chengdu Plain, Linpan connects homes, groves, waterways and farmland. At Huaxi Village, the existing settlement pattern informed the reconstruction design, with an intention to retain its diversity and its relationship with the surrounding landscape.

The design visualisations show houses, gardens, trees and paths considered as parts of a wider settlement.

People & reconstruction

Residents,
local government
and everyday life

The project developed through work with local government and residents. Housing reconstruction was considered alongside landscape planning and local livelihoods, connecting buildings with the wider settlement and the everyday life it supports.

The approach sought to respect the natural setting and regional culture.

Buildings,
paths and bamboo

Attention to the Linpan pattern places buildings within a larger relationship between settlement and landscape.

The archival photograph records white walls, tiled roofs and a path beside bamboo, offering a closer view of the village setting.

Circularity & continuity

Continuity through
reconstruction

The 2009 design sought to carry the diversity of the Linpan settlement pattern into reconstruction. Work with residents and local government placed housing within a wider consideration of landscape and local livelihoods.

Read through circularity, this early work provides a point of reference for Liu’s later projects: attention to what a place already has, and to the people who shape its future. Later work takes this attention into building reuse, local materials and bamboo craft.
